How to make a pair of sneakers?

Making a sneaker is a complex process that requires craftsmanship and meticulous attention to every detail. At IKO & NOTT, we are committed to creating high-quality, ethical sneakers , combining innovative design with traditional manufacturing techniques. In this article, we invite you to discover the different essential steps in the making of a sneaker, from the first sketch made in Paris to the final product, carefully crafted in a small factory in Portugal.

Every pair of sneakers we create is the result of a close collaboration between our design teams and the artisans in our factory. We carefully select the most durable and resistant materials, and we ensure that each step of production respects our commitment to the environment. Join us behind the scenes of the manufacturing of IKO & NOTT sneakers and explore with us everything that goes into creating a unique pair of shoes, designed to last and meet your demands for comfort and style.

1. The design: The starting point for making a sneaker

It all starts with an idea, a concept that takes shape on paper. Our designers in Paris draw inspiration from current trends, urban architecture, and sustainable materials to create unique models. During this stage, we also define the functional elements of the sneaker, such as arch support and sole flexibility. Each design is a balance between aesthetics and functionality, ensuring that our sneakers are not only beautiful, but also comfortable and practical for everyday use.

2. The choice of materials: the key to resistance and style

We send our design to our factory in Portugal. Together with them, we think about colours and materials. This can take a long time. This is the most interesting part: the research, the discussions, the creation of the product. In addition, for sneakers, you need resistance so that you can wear them in all weathers. This step can take up to six months.

3. Prototyping: transforming the drawing into reality

Prototyping is where the idea comes to life. Our factory’s pattern maker translates the drawing into patterns, which are then used to cut out the different pieces of the sneaker. Each prototype is adjusted and improved to maximize the comfort, durability, and appearance of the shoe. We go through multiple iterations of prototypes, testing each version to ensure it meets our rigorous criteria. This is also where we test different color and texture combinations.

4. Cutting the materials: preparation for assembly

Cutting materials is a technical step where precision is essential. Using specially designed die cutters, craftsmen cut materials following the patterns created during prototyping. This step requires great precision to minimize material waste and ensure that each piece is cut to perfection. The cut pieces are then carefully inspected to ensure that they are within specifications and ready for assembly.

5. Assembly: bringing the sneaker to life

Once the pieces are cut, they will be assembled, which is called stitching. The pieces are sewn together on a plastic form (perpetually reused), to have the shape adapted to the feet. At this point, we move on to the filling: the edge is folded then glued and sewn to have a perfect finish.

6. The assembly: The sneaker takes shape

The shoes are assembled and the outsole is integrated. The sneakers are starting to look like the final version! They are then put in the oven to be shaped.

7. The finishes: Attention to detail for a perfect sneaker

Finishing touches are what sets a premium sneaker apart. In this step, we add the final elements like laces, insoles, and labels. Each pair is hand inspected to ensure it meets our quality standards. We also make sure that small details, like loose threads, are taken care of to deliver a perfect product. Finally, the sneakers are carefully packaged in recycled boxes, ready to be shipped to our customers.

Before getting the final version of a pair we took more than a year to get the shape, color, materials we wanted. We learned to be patient to be able to make your IKO & NOTT.

We hope you enjoyed reading this and learned a lot about how a pair of sneakers is made.
